Synopsis

Adam Spencer loves women. All women. Every shape and size, regardless of hair or eye color, religion or race, he simply enjoys them all. Meeting more than his fair share as the manager and head bartender of The Odyssey, a hot spot in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, Adam’s comfortable with his lifestyle, and sees no reason to change it. A wife and kids, plus the white picket fence are not in the cards for this confirmed bachelor. Until a beautiful woman, and her sweet princess, literally knock him on his ass.

Sarah Cox has just moved to New Orleans, having accepted a position as a social worker specializing in at-risk women and children. It’s a demanding, sometimes dangerous job, but Sarah is no shy wallflower. She can handle just about anything that comes at her, even the attentions of one sexy Adam Spencer. Just because he’s charmed her daughter, making her think of magical kingdoms with happily ever after, doesn’t mean that Sarah believes in fairy tales. But the more time she spends with the enchanting man, the more he begins to sway her into believing in forever.

Even so, when Sarah’s job becomes more dangerous than any of them bargained for, will she be ripped from Adam’s life forever?

Just when I’m on the verge of busting my own door down, I get it open, usher Sarah inside, and simply drop my keys to the floor, pin her against the closed door, and bury my face in her neck, breathing her in.

She plants her hands on my sides and fists my shirt.

“You smell so damn good,” I mutter and kiss the soft flesh of her neck. She’s pulled my shirt out of my pants and her hands are on my skin, and it’s pure heaven.

“Adam,” she whispers.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“I’m going to need you to get naked now.”

I chuckle, delighted in her. I get the feeling that she hasn’t been with anyone in a while, but she’s not shy about what she wants, and that’s as much a turn on as her curvy body.

“I’m going to kiss every inch of you,” I say softly. My breath catches when she drags her hands down my sides and over my stomach. It’s a wonder I haven’t busted out of my jeans.

“I want a turn too,” she says, and that’s it. I need her. Need her. Now.

I push off the door and take her hand, leading her to my bedroom. When I turn to pull her to me, she rushes to me, and her hands immediately go for my jeans.

She’s in a hurry. When I glance down, her fingers are shaking, and she won’t look up at me.

She’s nervous.

We can’t have that.

“Sweetheart.” I catch her chin with my finger and tip her face up to look at me. “Sarah, this isn’t a race.”

“Seriously, get naked, and we can get to it.”

Get to it?

Under normal circumstances, I would agree with her 100%. I enjoy foreplay as much as the next person, but the main event is, well, the main event.

But I don’t want to rush this with her. I want to explore her, listen to her, smell her.

Savor her.

I grip her hands in mine and raise them to my lips, pressing a kiss to her fingers.

“We’re going to get to it, trust me, but we’re going to get there slowly.”

Header Easy for Keeps

For those of you that, like me, read all of Kristen Proby’s books, or in particular, the Boudreaux series, we know Adam as being Callie’s (Easy Melody, book 3) partner and bartender on Odyssey, their popular bar on New Orleans’s French Quarter.

He is the typical playboy bartender, and makes no apologies for it. The only permanent attachment he sees in his life is the bar, where he worked most of his life and always loved. Although he professes that he isn’t a ‘settling down’ kind of guy, lately he hasn’t been enjoying, or even taking part on the lifestyle. Maybe he is unsubconsciously waiting for something special to come his way… Or a certain couple of damsels in distress to cross his path…

Sarah has been widowed for more than three years, and has been completely dedicated to her five year old daughter Hailey and her job as a social worker.

When the sexy as hell Adam unexpectedly comes to her aid more than once, she can’t deny the deep attraction between them. Given that and his no-strings vibe, she decides – with a little push from a friend – that maybe he is the perfect man to get back on the dating world, even if it’s only for one night.

“This is the first date—aside from one bad one that doesn’t count—that I’ve been on. Frankly, life goes on, Adam. Kurt would tell me the same thing. Life goes on, and we have to live it.

Adam couldn’t be happier with that decision, but one night just isn’t enough for either of them. So, as day by day passes, their relationship evolves, as obviously so do their feelings, and although that scares both of them, they are all in. Specially when there is a little girl just as emotional involved as them.

Teaser 1 Easy for Keeps

I ADORE a single parent trope, specially a single mother, and this one was no exception. I just can resist seeing a big hot man, previous player, fall hard and fast for the mother as much as for the daughter, and Adam and Hailey’s interactions are one of the most memorable things in this tale, absolutely guaranteed to melt even the iciest of hearts. Hailey showed us Adam’s swoon-worthiness to a whole new level… Sigh…

Seeing how incredibly sweet they are together, Sarah didn’t stand a chance of not falling in love, and neither have we!

05e18264a90eb0a320ad5cad37eae8ca

Adam and Sarah were incredible together. Sarah awakened his true alpha nature, first through his protective side, immediately upon meeting, and then, almost instantly after they start dating, his dominant and possessive instincts take over where she is concerned, and let me tell you, it was beyond HOT! Their sizzling sex scenes were just as enticing as their sweet and caring moments, and I couldn’t get enough! They that delightfully addictive!

Teaser Easy for Keeps

I completely devoured and adored this charming story, and although short  – the only down point, in my opinion, because it leaves us wanting even more – true to the 1001 Dark Nights, the amount of fantastic moments isn’t in any way lacking. This little read indeed packs a punch. Kristen Proby has, yet again and true to her writing style, created an amazingly sweet, captivating and ultra sexy book. Easy for Keeps is the perfect appetizer to tease and stimulate our appetite for the upcoming book in the series, Easy Kisses.

“I love you, Sarah.”

“Wow. These drugs are good. I just dreamed that you said you love me.”

I grin again and kiss her cheek. “I did. I love you so much. For those few moments that I thought I might lose you…it was agony, Sarah. I didn’t want another minute to go by without telling you that I love you because I realize how short life can be, and we shouldn’t waste it.”

“This is a very serious conversation for someone on hard narcotics,” she says, but she cups my face in her hands and looks deeply into my eyes. “But I love you too, handsome. I love you so much that it hurts, and let me tell you, that’s a lot.”

Excerpt

(BLACK Copyright 2016 by Aria Cole)

“You’re only twenty-one?” I ran a palm through my hair, thinking how I’d already had my dick between her legs, tasted her on my tongue. Jesus, she’s just out of high school. “How can you be so calm? Jesus, I nearly fucked you on my desk. Why didn’t you tell me you were only twenty-one?”

“It won’t make it any less true the more times you say it.” Her eyes flashed. “And we’re not that far apart.” She shrugged, then popped a bite into her mouth.

“Not that far? Ten years seems pretty far to me,” I bit, never feeling so goddamn old as I did sitting next to her in all her pretty, youthful glory. Jesus, she was beautiful. Why was she even here with me? The angry bastard with the nasty scar? I didn’t deserve her.

“Hey, chill out.” She plucked a bite from the plate and held it out for me. I snagged it between my teeth and chewed, never breaking eye contact. Her eyes glistened with amusement as she watched me, her full lips tipped in a Cheshire grin.

“Fine. But maybe don’t tell anyone your age for now,” I ground through my teeth before tightening my palm at her thigh again.

A soft chuckle fell from her lips. “Who would I tell? You’re my only friend.” Her palm covered mine as she threaded her fingers through mine. “What’s with the hands on me all the time thing, anyway?” Elle uttered just as she took another sip of her beer bottle. A girl who drank beer, the walking embodiment of a man’s dream come true. She was so cool, calm, and collected, I could certainly take a play or two from her book.

“Let’s them know you’re mine,” I ground, still uncomfortable with the fact that she was so much younger than me.

“Yours?” She almost spit out her beer with her chuckle. “That’s a little soon, don’t you think?”

“Not when you know,” I answered simply. The silence fell and I knew her mind was probably on fire with thoughts again. “Listen, I don’t want anyone else thinking they have a chance with you. This shows them not to fuck with my property.” I squeezed at her thigh, thinking I’d explained myself sufficiently enough.

“Your property?” Elle hummed as she pushed her half-eaten plate of food away before downing the rest of her bottle. “Your property?”

Oh shit.

“Elle!” I hollered, my thick thighs pushing the table across noisy tile when I stood hastily. “Elle!” I took long strides out the door, feeling at my neck the burn of judgment from everyone in that small place. Fuck this. This was why I didn’t go out in public.

“Goddamn it, slow down!” I boomed down the sidewalk where I saw her clutching her purse and leveling me with a glare. Jesus Christ, this woman was going to be the death of me. “Don’t run from me like that again, hear me?” I cupped her elbow and pressed her body against the cool brick of the building. “You are mine.” I ran my nose up the curve of her neck and nipped at her soft earlobe. “Even if you don’t know it yet, I can feel it,” I grit and thrust my hands into her mass of wild waves, pulling her head to mine and fucking her with my tongue. She returned the gesture, but with more ferocity than she’d ever shown before. I yanked at both of her thighs and pulled her limbs around my waist, angling her against the wall, my cock nestled right between her legs, right where he liked being.

“I’m not yours,” she uttered in protest as she nibbled at my bottom lip.

“The fuck you aren’t.” I gripped at one thigh, my other hand trailing between us to find the slick skin under her skirt and beneath her panties. “And this.” I pulled my thumb through the silky hot flame of her pussy and brought it up to my mouth, letting her arousal glisten across my full lips. “Proves you’re a liar.” I sucked her sweet honeysuckle musk off my thumb, then pulled her lips to mine again, crushing her with bruising force as I tasted her, desperate for more. Always desperate for more when it came to sweet Elle.

Header Black by Aria Cole

Black is a contemporary version of the classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast.

Maxwell has been living isolated for years after a traumatic event that left him scarred in more ways than one.

His subterfuge is his library, which is open to the public, and books are the only company he thinks he needs, or more so, that he trusts.

Books were the only things that had been with me through it all. I’d never found solace in people; I’d found nothing but pain and betrayal and lies. Books provided shelter and support and encouragement.

But deep down in his lonely existence, he wishes, longs for something more, or better yet, someone…

But sometimes, on the nights that my thoughts overtook me, I dared to hope for someone to share my life with. I dreamed of a girl with eyes that sparkled, a laugh that made me weak in the knees, and a heart so big she could fit mine in it. Someone who could see past the moody, abrasive demeanor, and the thousand quirks that made me a man unlike any other.

Someone who could see past the scar and into my soul.

A revelation sliced through my heart. For the first time ever, I wanted to feel love.

I’d just never found a woman brave enough to love a man like me.

But he could barely dare to dream for that. In reality, he had no hope that this woman existed, much less that she would ever cross paths with him.

But the proof that dreams do could true appears right at his doorstep…

Elle is on the run, lost and alone, she doesn’t realize she’s searching for something, or someone, to give her life a new meaning, a new direction, something to hold on too. And this brings her right to Maxwell’s library, looking for a job, but finding herself with a new task, breaking down the walls he, due to his dark past, has built around himself.

Teaser 1 Black by Aria Cole

Elle knows all too well about painful pasts. If there is one person that can understand him, and see beyond his scarred, rough persona, it’s her.

I knew all too well about scars. How they were ugly and deformed from the outside in. Daunting slashes scraped across layers of delicate flesh. Maxwell wore his scar on his face, I wore mine on the inside. Mine festered and did not heal. My scars destroyed me and made me run; his seemed to have destroyed him and made him hide.

But healing a soul isn’t the easiest of journeys and it’s proven by the rough path they had ahead of them.

With so many mental roadblocks, even their strong instant pull is not enough, and with the secrets they both keep, Trust proves to be their biggest challenge.

Elle was such a sweet and loving character, a real mirror of the Beauty in the classic tale. Even with her sad past, she has an incredible amount of hope, and when she meets Maxwell, see can see right through his facade, that reflects a loneliness much like her own. With him, the first time in her life, she feels safe.

Teaser 2 Black by Aria Cole

Their attraction was immediate, and shocking for both of them, but Maxwell is the one who truly struggles to give in. After so many years of isolation, and the nature of the tragic event from his past, it’s very hard for him to give trust to someone else, specially someone that, for him, seems to good to be true, and appear at a too perfect timing.

He hadn’t counted and didn’t believe in what Fate had reserved for him…

Even with all the drawbacks the couple had and the secrets they keep, which translate into a slow building relationship, something the had no change to fight was their physical pull, the insta-lust was immediate, and it wasn’t long before we got some sizzling hot, sexually charged scenes. Beware: a cold shower or a industrial sized fan may be needed! 😉

“So fucking sexy bent over, your pussy bared for me. You’re so fucking wet, sweetheart. Love seeing you so wet for my cock.”

They literally couldn’t keep they hands of each other, which is awesome and gives us a true erotic romance. And his beastly character sure did transport to those scenes scenes, in a very deliciously dominant way. And boy, did the man have a dirty mouth on him (and I freaking loved every word out of it)!

Teaser 3 Black by Aria Cole

Contemporary fairy tale is one of my favorite genres, and I have to say I loved this approach. For a debut novel, it’s amazing the quality of the writing and character development. The story captivates from beginning to end, transporting us to that small town and that very special library, where most of the book develops.

Both characters were amazing, the storyline completely focuses on them, with almost no interaction with other people, and given it’s a short story, I think it was a smart decision. I just wished that it hadn’t taken that long for Maxwell to come to terms with his feelings and his error of judgment of Elle’s intentions (which caused me to hurt along with her for too long). I understand these distrust and roughness were made to go along with his Beast similarity, but by extending his reactions and sometimes far too callous behavior towards her in such a short story, caused, in my opinion, the shift of attitude towards the end to be less credible and too sudden. And don’t get me wrong he also had some sweet and tender moments.

“You’re the only thing that matters to me; protecting you, keeping you, being with you.”

But his suspicious mind and dark side were constantly fighting to take over. That idea would have worked perfectly in a longer story or for a shorter period, but here it became to forced. And don’t get me wrong, I love this type of read-in-one-sitting type of story and would not change that! Besides that minor lack of character development / too sudden personality shift, I adored and enjoyed the hell out of it!

Black was the perfect story to indulge in some erotic romance, and contains all the elements I look for in this type of book: insta-love / lust, an OTT alpha Hero, possessive and protective and some off the charts HOT sex scenes. It has all this, and so much more! Aria Cole delivered a fantastic debut book, and I can’t praise and recommend it enough, so much so, that I became an instant fan and my stalking following was guaranteed! I can’t wait to put my grabby hands on White!!!

My beauty.

My love.

My Elle.

About FALLING UNDER YOU:

Norma Anders has always prided herself on her intelligence and determination. She climbed out of poverty, put herself through school and is now a chief financial advisor at Pierce Industries. She’s certainly a woman who won’t be topped. Not in business anyway.

But she’s pretty sure she’d like to be topped in the bedroom.

Unfortunately most men see independence and ambition in a woman and they run. Even her dominant boss, Hudson Pierce has turned down her advances, leaving her to fear that she will never find the lover she’s longing for.

Then the most unlikely candidate steps up. Boyd, her much-too-young and oh-so-hot assistant surprises her one night with bold suggestions and an authoritative demeanor he’s never shown her in the office.

It’s a bad idea…such a deliciously bad idea…but when Boyd takes the reins and leads her to sensual bliss she’s never known, the headstrong Norma can’t help but fall under his command.

FALLING UNDER YOU - RDL Teaser 1

Excerpt

After that, Boyd and I maintained the perception that Hudson desired, but everything was different. Though we still went through the routine we’d gone through for the past two years and still lived the roles we’d defined for ourselves, we’d reached a new understanding between us. We talked about our future a lot. It was our priority, and things began to change. Gwen got a place of her own, and Boyd officially gave up his apartment and moved in with me. He accompanied me to family dinners—even when Hudson was present. And little by little, I started tidying up projects at work so that I could hand them off to someone else if necessary.

Still, time went by. Thanksgiving came and went. The Monday after the four-day holiday, the annual executive Christmas party invitation arrived via intra-office mail.

“You can toss that,” I said to Boyd as he laid it on my desk.

“You aren’t planning to go? It’s at American Cut. Hudson’s rented out the entire restaurant. You love that place.”

I looked up from my computer screen. “I know. But it’s not as fun when I can’t take whom I want to take.” The year before I’d gone to the event and barely lasted an hour before I’d rushed home to Boyd and had a very different kind of party.

The corners of his mouth bent into a frown. Quietly, so no one passing by might hear, he said, “I hate that I’m the one standing in the way of you enjoying all the perks of your hard work.”

“It’s not really a perk. It’s one night. I’ll live.” But, the truth was, it was more than one night. My job required me to attend several events throughout the year. Time and time again I’d gone alone. I could ignore the looks and office gossip about my perpetually single status, but I despised not being able to share those occasions with Boyd. Sometimes I’d take him with me as my assistant, which was almost worse. At least at the office, I had work to distract me from pining for his glance or his touch. In social settings, it had gotten harder and harder not to brush my arm against his too closely, not to reach for his hand, not to behave too familiarly with him.

“Okay, then. If that’s what you want.” Boyd reached for the invitation, but I placed my hand on his wrist to stop him.

“You know what? It’s not what I want. And I’m tired of living like this.” I pushed my chair back from my desk and stood up.

FALLING UNDER YOU - RDL Teaser 2

Header Falling Under You

The Fixed series is one of my all time favorites, and this books was a wonderful addition to it.

Norma had always been focused on one thing, and one thing only, her professional career. Success was her goal, but lately she has been feeling that something is missing in her life, but not even she is sure for what it is. This confusion and warring feelings makes her take a chance and make a unsuccessful advance to Hudson, her boss, thinking that maybe he can give her what she’s been searching for.

She had no idea that her decision and his rejection, would trigger all the upcoming changes, and fulfilling of all her fantasies, by the person who she never allowed herself to dream, her assistant, Boyd.

As sure as I was that I could be in love with Hudson Pierce, I was in most definite lust with Boyd Barrett.

She was incredibly attracted to him, but there were so many professional and personal reasons for which she couldn’t give in to temptation, that she had barely allowed herself to fantasize about him…

But I’d never make a move on Boyd. He was my right-hand man, even at only twenty-six years of age—a detail often overshadowed by his skills and competence. A detail that I remembered again when I truly took a moment to gaze at the smooth baby face—which he usually hid behind a pair of nerdy, dark glasses—and his young, fit body. He probably had a six-pack tucked under those layers of clothes. I bet he could go for hours…

Boyd… Boy oh boy, was that man a delicious surprise! I was in the same state of shock (even after knowing about these two from the other books of the series) as Norma when he revealed his true/complete nature and his feelings towards her.

Teaser 1 Falling Under you

His other half, a sexy dominant persona, reveals to us a confidence and one of the more secure of himself personalities I had the pleasure of reading left me completely open-mouthed.

“And it turns you on to top someone at the top?”

Boyd ran his tongue along my slit then answered without looking up. “It turns me on that I can give you the one and only thing you can’t give yourself.”

“What’s that?” My voice was shaky, threadbare.

“A break.”

He did, not only, expose to Norma his feelings for her, and made her acknowledge and develop hers for him, but did it by also showing her a completely new world, where pleasure and love could coexist along with her professional career.

Teaser 2 Falling Under you

This short story was an absolute treat, specially for The Fixed series fans, such as myself. Like so many others, I’m sure, I was intrigued by their relationship, when it was hinted in the previous books, and their power exchange would work, on the long run, but Ms. Paige, more than delivered.

It was one of the most beautifully executed stories for this trope – older woman, younger man – that I’ve ever read, specially given their professional positions. My only wish was that the story could have been longer, for us to have the chance to see in depth their relationship develop, and going into the detail of some aspects that in this length could only be touch on the surface and looked over with the time jumps. Still, given the novella length, the storyline was perfectly explained, and its success was mainly, in my opinion, due to the maturity of Boyd’s character. He was truly wise beyond his years, which, coupled with his dominant side, gifted the trope and the balance between in and outside their professional atmosphere immensely. And let’s not forget their sizzling chemistry, which combined with his sexy dominant tendencies, provide us with some OTT HOT scenes. Lordy… Hot doesn’t even cover it! Guess you have to read to find out!

0b723a85daa209f1bd739f108c557976

By the end we truly believe that love can overcome all obstacles, and that it’s ok to dream in having it all, a successful career and a incredible love life. Because sometimes those dreams do come true!

“I’d be very sad to have to go. But I can live without anything except you.”

It’s a busy job being a woman at the top, and as they say, lonely. But only if you insist on always being on top.

I’m one of the lucky ones who’s learned sometimes it’s better being underneath.

Deeply misunderstood and dedicated to his life of brooding solitude, Maxwell Black is hesitant to let Elle McKellan into his home where his hideous secrets hide. But he’s unable to resist the allure of this desperate stranger.

Soon the magnetism between them is undeniable, the temptation unbearable. Elle, reluctant to risk losing her heart to this dark and broken man, struggles against the sexual tension, only to surrender to the combustible heat between them.

When Elle’s life catches up to her and threatens to tear them apart, Maxwell will protect the precious love he’s found by any brutal means necessary.

Black is a sexy, modern spin on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale and is intended for mature audiences.

My beauty.

My love.

My Elle.

HUNTED BY DARKNESS (Darkness #4) by Katie Reus

HbD Header.jpg

Bo and Nyx met in the previous book, Beyond the Darkness. They were immediately draw to each other, but none of them knew how to really deal with this attraction.

Bo is a half demon, the result of demon raping his mother. He was raised by his loving human mother, but he’s full of self loathing of his demon part, because in his mind it puts him close to his father’s nature, whom he hates.  The moment he sees Nyx, his world view shifts and she becomes the center of it, even if she does see it. For the first time in his life he is overwhelmed with new feelings. He is such a strong and wonderful character, I admit I was surprised to love him so much considering his manwhoring past (pet peeve of mine), but we really feel that Nyx completely changed his reality and that his promiscuous past really was a consequence of his restless demon nature. And one he truly and deeply regrets.

“If I could go back and change how I was before I met you, I would. But I can’t. Sex and fighting are the only things that keep my demon at bay in this realm. Until you.”

As a reader, even with the occasional small OW drama and misunderstandings, we feel his shame, and never once doubt his loyalty to Nyx. I adored that he was celibate from the very moment he met Nyx, even fighting his very nature and his coping mechanisms, which reinforced his feelings and love for her, even more. And didn’t have to fight hard because Nyx, even only her presence, calmed his demon.

“I never imagined someone like you existed, Nyx. And definitely not for me. I feel like I’ve been living in a haze until I met you.”

Nyx is a half demigod, half fae princess, who’s searching for her own place in the world, since she was always controlled by their selfish and uncaring parents. This quest brings her to Bo’s supernatural club, were she meets her fate, even if she doesn’t realize it at the time.

She is strong and sassy, but also one of the most selfless characters I have ever read, she truly puts everyone else’s needs in front of her own, even if it means putting her own life is at risk. Something that Bo’s is not allowing, only if he’s there to protect her every step of the way.

Bo’s protective and possessive side are just part of reason for her attraction to him. What he doesn’t realize is that she is just drawn to his half demon as she is to his human one.

HbD Teaser 2

Throughout this book’s journey, they both discern that they can’t deny those strong feelings, and that the things they fear are going to be rejected by the other, are in fact part of their allure to the other.

“I know I’m not good enough for you so I get your fears because I have them too. I’m terrified you’ll wake up one day and realize you can do so much better than me.”

Bo’s possessive and primal demon side is only more enhanced, complemented by Nyx’s sweet and innocent nature. I adored how incredibly devoted he was to her, showing us his sweet side, within all that alpha hotness.

HbD Teaser 3

Once their magnetism combusts and they give in, it translates in some steamy, off the charts sex scenes, where we can really feel Bo’s  demon nature uncontrollable necessity to claim her as his mate.

But all he wanted to do was keep her safe. Claim her. Make her his forever.

And Nyx, even though innocent, doesn’t lack passion, and her chaotic demigod side sure spices things up! 😉

HbD Teaser 1.jpg

When they finally embrace the love and feelings they have for each other and realize that they are the strongest together and balance one another, they find out that their natures are the perfect counterpart to the other, that they truly complete as ONE.

The adventure side and all the fantastic secondary characters augment even more the appeal of this story and makes us want to dig into the side characters own story, to find out more about them, especially Ian and Rory, Bo’s half brother.

Katie Reus creates these magical paranormal worlds with exciting and amazing characters that always leave us wanting more and more, and are without a doubt one of the best PNR books I have ever read, therefore an auto-read for me. I can’t wait to dive in Into the Darkness!

“I don’t know if it’ll matter to you, but I want to get married. I’m half human and I want the symbolism.” Being mated mattered to him as well but he needed the marriage too. He needed it all from Nyx.

Her blue eyes brightened. “I’ve seen a lot of human movies,” she whispered. “I think you’re supposed to be on one knee.”

He was on the ground before she’d finished—and so was she.

JUST GIVE A REASON (Lopez Brothers #2) by Rebecca Rogers Maher

Header Just Give me a Reason

Tony is a recently divorced, single parent of two little girls.
For years he was dedicated to his store/business and family, but now with his divorce finalized six months prior and the struggle to keep his business afloat., he feels that he’s losing control of everything around him, and he’s slowly drowning. But he feels he needs to keep up appearances for his girls and for his younger brother Ray (the H of the previous installment).

Beth is a strong willed independent woman. After a weekend fling where all form of birth control failed, she found herself pregnant, but instead of the predicted emotions for a person with her lifestyle, she decided to embrace Fate and was confident about her option. Before this life changing event, she was a very sexually liberated woman, she enjoyed her ONS and was always very honest with her partners.

How are you supposed to do that when you’re shackled to one person for your whole entire life? People should have the freedom to fuck their obsessions away when they feel like it.

I will never, ever make that mistake. I might not want a long-term relationship, but I’m not a cruel person. I don’t want to be the cause of anyone’s suffering. By being rigorously, diligently honest, I make sure that doesn’t happen. Always. I make sure the other person can accept my terms before I get involved with them.

d2cdc537fc2abaef3bcf4860e5ae13fd

As she mentions multiple times through the book, her problem regards the conventional, monogamous relationship, especially marriage, not children, so she always saw them in her future, but always as a single mother. Her deeply ingrained issues with marriage, as we find out through the reading, come from her parents disastrous marriage ( I won’t reveal too much here because that is one of the main core issues to the character, and the slow paced reveal really adds to the enjoyment of the book).

From the moment they meet (Beth is best friends with Holly, who is dating/living together with Ray, Tony’s brother – previous book MCs), they immediately feel drawn to one another, but with Beth’s recent pregnancy discovery and Tony’s personal and professional life problems, they try to ignore the chemistry.

ba4368d800a5f9e862fefce203ae6e6b

Certain events take place (with a little unconscious help from Holly and Ray) and they find themselves cohabiting the same space, and struggling even more with their physical reaction to the other. Until the moment they loose the fight…

“But for the record,” she says, “you are kind of ridiculously hot, okay? I want you to know that.” I breathe in, deeply, and hold the breath. She can’t possibly know what it means to me to hear that. After so many years of Alexa’s indifference. I know I’m not bad-looking. I know I’m a decent guy. But when your wife doesn’t want you, how can that not crumble your confidence?

0125d09be7b6c8823c46c436c9043f74

OMG, I can honestly say it was one of the more realistic books I have ever read, their personal insecurities, their fights, and their honesty was incredible.

I might not be the woman for him in the long term; I’m not that woman for any man. But I can give him one gift today. The gift of losing himself. The gift of learning what lies beneath the nice guy he so studiously presents to the world.

As much as it hurts—and God, why does it hurt so much?—I can set aside my own complicated feelings. And just support her.

I was feeling what they were feeling, suffering with their internal battles, cheering their obstacle they overcame, and yelling my head with their poor decisions.

I wasn’t built for long-term romantic commitment. I am too much like my father. Impatient and restless, wanting adventure and space and my own separate life. I would hurt Tony like Dad hurt Mom, and I couldn’t live with myself if I did that.
He deserves so much better.

“You think you’re going to hurt him, don’t you? You think you can’t be you and still be with him, and you think you’re going to get sick of that and leave, and break his heart.”

Given how much I enjoyed the book, I have to say that Beth’s denial in accepting their relationship, her feelings for Tony, and particularly her unconsciously blindness and denial, were the main reason to which my rating wasn’t higher. I could understand the first time – not that I liked it – she pushed him away and didn’t want contact, but the second time <spoiler>after her baby’s birth, where he was her support and help </spoiler> I was really mad at her. It was to much, because Tony, he was just so damn sweet and loving…

I’ve tried to be as normal as I could—like a friend would be.
But this.
This was always here.
This need for her. This craving.
This love.
Rippling through me. Tying my hands.
Asking for more.
Because it’s not enough, only being Beth’s friend.

“I love you, Beth. And I want you. And your child. Everything is what I want. That’s how it is.”

23marcus-cc3a2mara

He was really incredible, I just wish, at times, that he was a stronger, less beta, character, and hadn’t allowed her to push him away so much. That he had taken some action. I understood why he didn’t, given his past and the reasons for his failed marriage, I just wanted a bit more strength and hands on attitude! This being said, for a beta, he was of the best and sweeter male MCs I have ever read. In the end, they overcame their problems, but damn, I wanted more, hence the other half a star deduction, because their ending felt a bit unfinished, and I wanted a epilogue, to see how they manage their solution on the long haul. Nonetheless, it was a great read, and I will for sure, read more from the author.

There’s no going back now to the place inside myself where I’ve been hiding all these years. For better or worse, she found me out. And now here I am, as open as she is.
