4.5 ‘My Duke’ Stars

My, oh my… Talk about rendering me speechless… What may I say, other than One Night With The Duke will NEVER be enough! Mind blowingly enrapturing, passionate and oh so utterly engaging, that I could not read it in all but one sitting!

Ms. Malpas’ first dip into one of my favourite genres, Historical Romance, was as massive success as her intense contemporary romances. I should not be surprised, given her writing is one of the most addictive I’ve had the pleasure of reading – or should I say, devouring – but the way that Eliza and her Duke stole my heart in a blink of an eye, is no joking matter.

He has my heart and I am terrified I will never get it back.

He means freedom. Happiness. Light.

Eliza Melrose, and her quick wit and take no prisoners manner, may have proved tough to live with in her time, but I delighted in every moment, every scheme her curiosity led her too, a woman after my own heart. And Duke Winters…*dreamy sigh* How could one resist this tantalising, mysterious, gorgeous and complicated man?! One simply can not I tell you! A true JEM kind of broken Alpha, with a capital A, Johnny Winters was the true ‘handsome devil’, but the more we know, and FALL, for him, the more his complexity and sexual magnetism captivate us. His unraveling, his intensity, just made him that more enticing, and by the end, wow, my heart didn’t stand a chance!

‘This won’t only be one night, Eliza,’ he says, his voice strong but rough. ‘Once I’ve had you, I will not give you up.’

Jodi Ellen Malpas’ outstanding debut in HR provided us not only my new HR addiction, but an incredible and epic world building, that transported us to that time and place. I could feel and see the whole of Belmore Square like I was one of its residents, and the richness and diversity of its characters, just spike my curiosity to no end, in such a way that even now after that marvellous ending, that made my heart soar, I’m already dying for the next Belmore Square tale! Completely and utterly addicted, I tell you!!!

Write,’ he orders gently, pushing his lips into my neck, biting softly at my flesh. ‘And when you are finished, I will show you how the story ends.’

Synopsis

Fiona Mahoney chases Jack the Ripper from the shadows of Whitechapel into the most infamous brothels of Victorian London’s thriving sex trade, where secrets are exchanged as currency, and the bodies of murdered women leave a lethal trail to follow…

Standing in the ashes of her tragedy and laden with the secrets of the dead, Fiona seeks out the rough and relentless Inspector Grayson Croft to unburden her conscience. Before she can confess, Croft reveals the one thing that could dispel all thoughts of revelation.

Prostitutes are again being murdered, and a name is being whispered over their suggestively staged corpses. The name of the man who brutally slaughtered her childhood best friend. The name against which Fiona would sell her very soul for vengeance.

Jack the Ripper.

Only the promise of justice could entice Fiona to do something as reckless and daring as infiltrating the ranks of elite courtesans who accept the threat of violence as a nightly norm. She quickly learns that sin and scandal are powerfully compelling motives for murder, and that the secrets of the dead are sometimes worth keeping… if only to avoid becoming the next victim.

When the danger becomes too deadly to face alone, Fiona is forced to call upon old enemies and new friends including “the Hammer” a charismatic gangster, and “the Blade” an enigmatic assassin, and maybe even the Ripper, himself. Who better to help pursue a relentless evil than the devil you know?

5 ‘The Cards’ Stars

EX…TRAOR…DI…NARY!!! Tantalizingly enrapturing, cleverly orchestrated, and so heartbreakingly emotional and real, A Treacherous Trade surpassed all my wildest expectations!

For more than two years I’ve been dying for more of, not only Fiona, but Croft, The Hammer and The Blade, and well, all my prayers were answered because more – so much more! – we got, and still, after that surprisingly and maddening ‘ending’ I’m left BEGGING for the next, I NEED to know who was Fiona’s choice. My romantic heart can’t take the added suspense, and Ms. Byrne sure knows how to tease us!!!

The way the story’s mystery unveils, all its cards are laid, and how they intertwined  with not only the Ripper storyline, but also Fiona’s personal and intimate tale, are done so exquisitely well that I was not only fully immersed into it, but felt like I was LIVING it along with Fiona. In this the superb audiobook also factored in, no doubt, due to it’s brilliant narration. Kerrigan Byrne set the premise so exquisitely in Business of Blood with its complex and intriguing characters, that in Treacherous Trade I felt the fluidity of the mysteries as one, and for that I warn that though possible to understand and enjoy the books individually, for the full Mahoney experience, one should read them together. Trust me, and heed my warning, you will be left wanting even more, just like I am. I DESPERATELY need more Fiona and all her ‘wolves’!

5 ‘Ye Give Me Life’ Stars

Oh Lordy! ALL SCOT AND BOTHERED is the PERFECT title for this deliciously sensual and captivating Historical Romance! This enemies to lovers, wrapped up in mystery, love story instantly enraptures our attention with the dichotomy between sweet and caring Cecelia and the grouchy and law stickler Ramsay. With a palpable magnetism, exquisite banter, heart squeezing emotional charge and a sexy slow burn, Ms. Byrne creates one of 2020 must reads, and leaves as begging for the last of the Red Rogues!

The setting of this series on itself alone enchants me to no end. This premise of three women that are are devoted to one another as Cecelia, Alexandra and Francesca, and all they have been trough in the past, I couldn’t wish to see anyone get their HEA more than these ladies.

And HEA it is, here, for Cecelia and Ramsay, but boy oh boy it was a journey to get there! Ramsay, oldest brother of the previous H, Chief Justice, Vicar of Vice, is a absolutely uncompromising, unyielding, prejudice filled mountain of a man, that wars such a tremendous internal battle with himself, that we could feel every single second of his scorn, and self hate, his struggle to balance the person he was deep down, with the person he wanted to portray to others. And when Cecelia Teague came into his over disciplined life, and made him crave her like nothing else, well, you can very well imagine how that went, lol.

On a plus side, though, that Scottish brogue, my oh my… Lord Chief Justice Ramsay deliciously raspy Scot’s accent did things to me, lol, I could seriously picture and feel each and every single one of his low key sexy rumbles, specially when he was all growly with Cecilia. And when it was to intone sweet words… Swoon….

“Your smiles are genuine. Rare. Something to be treasured. Like diamonds.”

Cecelia was as darling, sweet and caring as I expected her to be, and I loved every facet of her, such a pure and tender soul, it was impossible not want to protect her, even though she was strong and independent. There was just something so utterly captivating in her, in her insecurities, her broken past and self doubts, that it’s a wonder, like Ramsay mentions at some point, how she is still unwed, there should be flocks of men courting her, not bullying her, like it seemed to happen in her past, and present reality. I adored her, and was so, so joyful for her when after Ramsay FINALLY came to his senses, after the longest of slow burns by Ms. Byrne so far, and showered her with all the love and appraisal she so deserved.

So yes, I spent a big portion of the book disliking Ramsay and his callous treatment of Cecelia, though his inner thoughts helped soothe it some, but I so wished he had come to his senses much sooner in the story so we would have more true ‘couple’ time, but in the end he made up for it with a good grovel, and his loved filled declarations.

These characters are so deeply developed, that even the secondary characters take a life of their own, and color even brighter the already beyond interesting main couple. Every scene in which the core cast was present, I soaked up every once of their interactions, so interesting and entertaining they are, not only the Red Rogues – I can never get enough of these ladies -, but their men, as well as Jean-Yves  and here the adorable little Phoebe. I can never get enough of these

Full of twists and turns that surprised me and delighted at the same time, All Scot and Bothered shows us once again Kerrigan Byrne’ masterful historical romance story telling, so rich, emotional, complex, passionate and suspenseful with just the right amount of dark, that leaves me always craving the next book, and in this case begging for Francesca’s tale. I can NOT wait to see how the most fierce of the Red Rogues is going to deal with her match!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

Cecelia, ye are my happiness. If I have ye and Phoebe, I need nothing else. If ye think well of me, then I’ve achieved the perfection I’ve striven for so long.”

Synopsis

London, 1890. Blood and death are Fiona Mahoney’s trade, and business, as they say, is booming.

Dying is the only thing people do with any regularity, and Fiona makes her indecorous living cleaning up after the corpses are carted away. Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It’s been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary’s blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn’t forgotten. She hasn’t stopped searching for Jack.

When she’s called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary’s old home. The relentless and irritatingly handsome Inspector Grayson Croft warns her away from the case. She might have listened, if she hadn’t found a clue in the blood. A clue that will lead her down a path from which there is no return.

As a killer cuts a devastating swath through London, a letter written in blood arrives at her door, and it is only then that Fiona realizes just how perilous her endeavor is. For she has drawn the attention of an obsessive evil, and is no longer the hunter, but the prey.

Fiona Mahoney is in the business of blood. But she’s not the only one.

With intriguing twists, blood-chilling discoveries, and dazzling prose, USA Today Bestselling author Kerrigan Byrne shows that a woman’s work is never done, even when is sleuthing out a serial killer.

Excerpt

Aidan stood behind me for a moment, motionless and silent. I could hear every word ever spoken and unspoken between us spilling onto the ground at my back.

“I understand what the years have done to you, Fiona. I know all the reasons you do what you do.” The pity in his voice summoned a scream from deep, deep in my soul, and I swallowed three times to keep it from escaping. “I appreciate that you have to be cold sometimes. But have a care this profession of yours doesn’t make you heartless.”

Heartless.

Struck by an idea, I frantically searched until I found Frank Sawyer’s heart in the center of the basin. An unceasingly strong muscle upon which one’s entire existence depended. I counted four chambers. Four valves. I stared hard, unblinking in the wan light until Aidan’s retreating footsteps plodded away.

I’d never found Mary Kelly’s heart.

Every single part of her had been catalogued in all its exposed and grotesque exactitude. But not her heart. The Ripper had taken that, along with her life.

I searched for the palpitations to prove Aidan wrong and found them, faint and fluttering, against my rib cage.  I still had a heart, even though he owned pieces of it. And yet, I’d stood over too many corpses of those I loved, each time expecting my bleeding heart to just…stop. It should, I think. When a heart was broken as many times as mine, it shouldn’t work anymore. But somehow, it still did. It kept going.

And so long as it beat in its chamber, I’d search for the Ripper.

5 ‘Until The Ghosts Are Put To Rest’ Stars

Oooohhhhh, Kerrigan Byrne rocked my world with this twist on Jack The Ripper, because it’s SO MUCH more than I expected! Mind, heart and soul gripping, THE BUSINESS OF BLOOD is a full blown experience!

I tend to stay away from anything close to horror genre, but as soon as Ms. Byrne announced this book as a brand new Historical Mystery I wanted to jump right in. Being a huge retelling fan, I could only imagine how enrapturing TBoB would be. Well, I really had no idea just how much I would be absorbed…

Aye, well. Sometimes I worried for my soul, too. God knows I’ve committed enough sins these days to procure my place in hell.

Fiona Mahoney is everything I love in an heroine and some. Not only is she smart, independent and strong beyond belief – which is even more extraordinary considering the time and age – , but she have such a hidden fragility in her feeling and emotions, if not only in her POV, that we immediately related to her, her pain, and her thirst for justice and a bit of revenge.

Death’s business is a messy one.
And I made my living cleaning up after him. At least here in London.

Being a self employed woman at that time and age, and the nature of her business as cleaning up murder scenes is, on itself so avant guard that it’s no wonder I was hooked even before I got into Fiona’s intricate and heart felt mind and spirit.

From the very first page I felt every single emotion she went through: from the loneliness, to the pain, the rage, the fear, the confusion, and heart and body’s reactions to all the intriguing men she interacted with – specially Inspector Croft, who I romance reader’s heart is rooting for, because even though this is not a romance, hello potential broody Hero! LOL – , I was there, going through it all right along with her. Ms. Byrne truly has a the gift to transport us in time and space with her incredible story telling!

I’d stood over too many corpses of those I love, and each time I expected my bleeding heart to just…stop. It should, I think. When it’s broken as many times as mine, it shouldn’t work anymore. But somehow it still did. It kept going.
And so long as it beat in its chamber, I’d be searching for the Ripper.

The twists and turns, the dark and gothic elements that Ms. Byrne does to perfection, it’s just impossible not to dip into this world and find yourself completely immersed in this universe and in Fiona Mahoney’s mind! And oh my, for a non romance the sexual tension just left me…*delicious shivers*

Oil and water, that was Croft and me. Two negatively charged magnets repelling each other by nature of physical law.

The Business of Blood indeed blew my mind, not only because of the shock and the surprise I passed with the unfolding of the mystery, the cleverness of the connection of the background feud with The Ripper that I have no doubt will follow all this series, but specially because it left me BEGGING for more! Kerrigan Byrne truly is a masterful storyteller! I had not even finished and I was already dreading the last page because I just knew I couldn’t be satisfied without knowing more, uncovering all the secrets and see the cementing of all relationship, so it’s safe to say I will be in pins and needles for the next book in the series, I truly CAN.NOT.WAIT!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

5 ‘Her Beast’ Stars

Oh my world, How To Love a Duke in Ten Days ended up surpassing all my already huge expectations! Ms. Byrne truly is the MASTER of dark/gothic historical romance! The rawness of the emotions, the carefully constructed and weaved setting, and the most well crafted and complex of characters stole my breath – along with my heart – away! Broken and imperfect, but yet so PERFECT for each other, Pries and Alexandra are what romance dreams are made off! HR perfection!

Ahhhh, this book! I should have expected an emotional and heart touching read since Ms. Byrne always gives us all the feels but this was so much more! With an opening scene, with Alexandra’s assault, we see instantly that this story will rip us apart, instantly upon their first meeting and unmeasurable hope and happiness overflows us, because we can FEEL these two are meant to be.

Once a man tasted ambrosia, the idea of any other sustenance curbed the appetite.

“If every woman tasted like you, a man would hunger for nothing else.”

Alexandra was such a beautiful, and broken, female lead. Normally in HR we usually see the hero being the broken one, but here, even though heartbreaking it witness all the events and her pain, shame and guilty, how strong and resilient she was, as it was fantastic to see first hand them falling for one another, and put each other broken pieces together, bit by bit.

“Didn’t you say all men are beasts?”
“Of course we are.” His knuckle caressed her cheek. “It’s why we need a beauty like you to temper us. To tame us. To teach us how to appreciate something delicate.”

He was her beast now. May God have mercy on her soul.

Piers is now on my TOP Book Boyfriend List! I love a goody and scarred hero, and he fit the role to a T, even with his maddening moments, lol. He was just sooooooo swoon worthy, whispering the most beautiful and loving of statement to Alexandra. SO caring and protective, truly what I loved the most in romance!

“I sometimes forget…”
“Forget what?”
“How beautiful you are.” He undid his cravat as he traveled the length of the sitting room. “Then I see you and realize that memory cannot compare to reality. I’m left as breathless as the first time we met.”

“My appearance, my manners, and my voice may be harsh, Alexandra, but I promise you my hands will never be anything but gentle with you.”

The secondary characters take on a big role here as is with Ms. Byrne’s other series, enticing us with this trio of strong and independent women each with an agenda of their own, Red Rogues. As well as Ramsay, Piers brother, that left me wondering if he’ll indeed be paired with a certain redhead. I sure hope so! 😉

How To Love a Duke In Ten Days is HR excellence at its finest! All the feelings, all the experiences, the friendship, the mystery, the suspense, the blooming relationship, the passion, and most of all, love, make this one of my all time fav of the genre.

This book truly was perfection for me, I wouldn’t change one bit of their journey, even the horrifying moments and pain, took them to most amazing of HEA, and Kerrigan Byrne once again delivers an outstanding story of friendship, partnership and soul mate love! Can’t wait to see which of the Red Rogue will fall next! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

“the cruelest thing you could do, is sentence me to a world without you in it.”

“I want all of you, Alexandra. I want your pleasure and your pain. Your sins and your secrets. Your past and your passions, your opinions and your pretenses. I want to know everything. All of it. To be the only one with whom you share them. I’m a selfish bastard, wife, and I’ll thank you to indulge me. I want you without limitations and beyond suspicions.”

5 ‘I’d sell my soul for a Penny’ Stars

SWOOOOONNNN… I feel exactly like a lady of this time period with all the swoons this book gave me! Oh my world, THE WALLFLOWER WAGER is now my fav Tessa Dare – and that is saying a lot with how much I adored The Duchess Deal ! – with Gabe and Penny’s book being an absolute euphony to all my senses! The carnal and palpitating passion, the banter, the bromance and the pets… All was perfection from start to end!

This book was outstandingly executed, I just feel like telling everyone to just go grab it, because FOR ME, it was Historical Romance Perfection! Sure, there were some inconsistencies with the time period and other minor insignificant stuff, but you cares in the face of this richness of characters and EPIC love story?! I know I don’t, I’m all about the feelings and the happiness and emotion it gave me.

That anger had been his companion when he didn’t have a friend in the world.
But he wasn’t alone anymore.
With Penny in his life, everything was different. He had to be different. If she was in danger, she was his to guard. If she was hurting, she was his to protect.

Penny, I knew I loved already from the previous books and reading about her and her feelings, and her past just took my love to devotion level. She was such a brilliant and pure soul, my perfect HR type of female lead.

Gabriel, being the definition of self made man, Penny’s temporary next door neighbor, was a distrustful man, closed off and skeptic as they come. And Broody, did I say broody already, lol?! If that introduction I was scared he would taint Penny’s brilliance, but boy was I wrong, he was her PERFECT match! He cherished her pureness and tender heart and made her shine, gave her strength and cherished her so. He was absolutely the Heroes, beating even Ash – awww, Ash, how I adore the – such devotion, such love, such passion, he was completely smitten from the start and once he accept it, my lord, how he was the image of the ultimate romance hero. Straight to Best Book Boyfriend list! He truly made me swoon every time he declared his feelings and emotions, awww!

“It was sheer courage. I could have been a murderer.” Emma sipped her tea. “And it wasn’t only me. Nicola, Alexandra, Ash, Chase . . . You’re the paste that binds us all together. Reaching out takes courage, and holding on takes even more.”

Now on the secondary characters, I feel I need to stand out all the animals, because their role was of such significance I could not go without given them and all their ventures a word, they were fantastic!!! From Freya the hedgehog to little dog Bixby, to the goat Marigold, otter Hubert and Angus the steer, and most of all the foul mouthed and enormously entertaining Delilah, all this pets had a hand in bringing Penny and Gabe together, in the most amusing and endearing of manners, how I adored them all.

And still on the secondary characters theme, I was delighted beyond believe with the interaction of the previous couple, but the men, omg, I LOVED THEM here and first their quest to protect Penny but at the same time the Bromance going on and blooming between Ash, Chase and Gabe. The interactions and banter was amazing and oh so delicious. I can never get enough of all these couples!

“We are who we are.”
“We are who we are.”
God, he loved who she was. But what was more, he loved who they were together. He couldn’t lose that.

Ms. Dare truly is masterful in her historical romance, creating the most fantastic of settings, and adding the richest of characters that not only transports us to their time, but make us feel every once of their emotions, adding a bit of contemporary feel, and allowing us to relate and identify with their battles, doubts and fear. In The Wallflower Wager, the friendship is a priceless treasure, the passion is heart pumping and palpable, and the love is absolute in its purity and splendor. No wonder this has now become one of my all time fav HR series, and with that teasing by the end, I’m now dying for Nicola’s, the über smart and spirited redhead, very own HEA!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

“I have every luxury a man could desire. Hundreds of thousands of pounds in my accounts. I worked like hell to build a fortune, and yet . . .” His thumb met her cheek with a reverent caress. “Now I’d sell my soul for a Penny.”

“I love you,” he said. “You may never teach that damned parrot to say it, but you taught me. You’ll never hear the end of it now, pretty girl. I love you.” Kiss. “I love you.” Kiss. “I love you.”

Synopsis

He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson

The accidental governess.

After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart… without risking her own.

The infamous rake.

Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling… and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

3.5 ‘Stars, Smudges and Not so Lost Souls’ Stars

Goodness Gracious, this Bookstore Rake! The Governess Game was fully packed with incredible and captivating surprises that ensnared me in the most deep and banterful of ways!

First of all I have to say that this book was one of my most anticipated books of the year, after my deep adoration of the Duchess Deal, I couldn’t wait to find out all about Alexandra and her Bookstore Rake. In that I caught my first surprise, with the book starting on a timeline of six months after their first meeting, and like Alex, that was hoping for a reunion the stuff romantic dream are made of, Chase Reynaud, completely started on the wrong foot here for me. Like Alex, all my expectations in is regard, not long vanish with the wind, but left kind of a bad taste in my mouth, with his rakish ways being slapped in her face – the man she had been dreaming a future and fantasizing about for months, not only did seem not recall her, but had been living a more than standard rake life with the ladies of town – and even joked about by the gentleman himself. I was sure in my mind that after that initial reunion scene, between the two,  and knowing what he had been doing for those months after that first impactful day – at least to Alex, lol – that there was no way that I’d ever warm up to him, but Ms. Dare’s fantastic writing and strong female characters once again proves that not only the male character makes or breaks the story, even if he is a OTT rakish one, lol.

“Be careful of him, Alex,” Nicola said. “If he is truly a rake, as you say.”
“Believe me, there’s nothing to fear. He isn’t interested in me. He didn’t even remember meeting me. Apparently I was quite forgettable.”

All those silly fantasies had popped like a soap bubble when it became clear he’d forgotten her completely. Chase Reynaud was not the man of her dreams. He was a devilish, incurable rake—and one who, by his own declaration, would never even think of seducing her.

Alexandra, even if deep down a dreamer and romantic at heart had a SPLENDID reaction to all her secret dreams of a romantic reunion being shattered in the presence of  such blunt rakish manner. I just adored how she called him out and took no prisoners. So strong and practical, independent and smart, she was my very favorite type of HR female character. Much like Emma in the first book – and seems to be a Tessa Dare feature, much beloved by myself – her spunky and practical spirit, very wild and free, with a tragic past of her own, she was also the sweetest of souls and a passionate star and universe study lover. The stars and comets were her hidden passion, and you could truly feel her soaring when discussing the matter. She was just full of surprises, and so delightfully complex, even one as rakish as Chase couldn’t stay away.

One more thing the water had taken from her. It was the insatiable monster in her life. Jonah’s whale. Devouring everything she loved, but spitting her back out, again and again, more lost and lonely than ever.

“A binary star is created when two stars are drawn together. Once they come near enough, neither one can resist the other’s pull. They’re stuck together forever, destined to spend eternity revolving about each other, like . . . like dancers in a waltz, I suppose.” She scribbled a note in her notebook. “The fascinating thing is, a binary star’s center of gravity isn’t in one star or the other. It’s in the empty space between them.”

No wonder Chase saw in Alexandra the perfect candidate to tend as Governess to his strong willed and spirited little wards. The job, that Alex was forced by Fate to take, close to the very last person she wanted to contact with, the future Duke, Chase Reynaud, proved to be even more challenging that she anticipated. Not only by the two little girls made tough by their background, but the devilish handsome rake employer of hers, that she couldn’t seem to stay away from, as neither did him. Evidently, the denied attraction and refusal to acknowledge their chemistry, resulted in the most delicious of banters! Seriously addictive, and I was just blown away by Alex’s no non-sense and straight forward, even naughty comebacks, his of course were as devilish as the rake himself.

“You’re simply too virile to be tied down, is that it?” Her eyes teased him. “Must be all those antlers.”

“If you must, but do it quickly. Otherwise we’re going to move a good seven inches in the wrong direction.”

Of course the bon vivant nature of Chase and his run instinct towards attachments had to hide a tortured background, and I understood his reasoning, I just wished his rake ways, his numerous lovers and many, many amorous ventures weren’t brought to surface at every other paragraph. I get that it was his defense and coping mechanism, but I need not be reminded of it – it was already impossible to forget with that start – so many times, specially when I was starting to warm up to him and believe in the sincerity  and depth of his growing feelings towards Alex. His past was already obstacle enough, for the love story, his self torture evident, and my heart actually hurt for him and his guilt.

Chase wasn’t good for much, but he could stand between her body and the world.

Holding her breast was like holding her heart in his hand.
And that scared the life out of him.

Only darkness here, darling. Don’t waste your time.

“Chase.” She softened her touch, smoothing back his hair. “No one’s a lost cause.”

His self hate and tortured soul were actually palpable, but when allowed to let go of the rake persona, we could truly feel how much Alexandra enchanted and captivated him, even consumed him in every way. I loved and lived for those moments, and like I said, if not reminded of the casanova past constantly, I’m sure I would have truly loved him too, because one thing I never doubted, he was so in love with this woman. His thoughts and loving, caring and devoted gesture made me swoon each time. When he allowed himself to FEEL, that is…

A man rose to his feet for a lady, his queen, or a divine being, and she was at least one of those—if not all three.

Want. Need. Take. Claim. Mine.

I so wish Chase had woken up to this love and Alexandra a bit earlier in the story. The man took his struggle too long and too late in the book and hurt Alexandra in a way, that even though I adored the groveling scene, I wanted a early grovel and even more impactful, after all he put her through. The scene setting though was PERFECT!

“So? How does it feel to be falling in love?”
Hopeless, Alex silently answered.
It felt hopeless indeed—because it was.

And Alexandra… What a fantastic female character and perfect example for those little girls, who by the way, completely stole the show! Daisy and Rosamund, Chase’s wards were a big part of my enjoyment of the book. Young, fragile, but SO strong, these little girls, really brought to light a side of Chase – specially those epic eulogies to Millicent’s repeated death’s – that endeared him in my, and I’m sure in Alex’s, eyes.

Tessa Dare gave us once again a superbly written historical romance with a very contemporary ‘feel’ that transported me completely to those times, and share the passion and struggle, and all the emotional range possible along with Alexandra. Her identity, her passion and love, as well as every day battle with the times and town mentality were so beautifully portrayed,  I felt for her, as well as for the girls.

I can honestly say that these little girls, along with Alexandra were the big high of the book and responsible for most of the rating, as well as recurring characters, like Asbury (spectacular second cameo, btw, lol), the other ladies, Emma, Penny and Nicola. I’ll be counting down the days, for the next two’s very own HEA. Can’t wait! <3 <3 <3 <3

His Alexandra. His always. His only.

“You are the last person I want to see before I fall asleep at night. Every night. The last woman I want to kiss for the remainder of my life. And your lovely face is the very last thing I want to see before I die. Because I love you, Alexandra.”
