Synopsis

He’s only a friend.

Those words had haunted him from the moment Jessie James had heard them muttered from the one girl, above all others, that he thought had his back.

Sixteen years later, he still feels those words like a brand on his soul.

Lucky for him he has a son to take care of, a full-time job that demands every single second of the day, and not a single moment to spare for the likes of a woman that won’t stand up for him when he needs her the most.

He’s only a friend.

The words had slipped out of Ellen’s mouth, and before she could recall them or better yet, explain, Jesse is gone from her life for good, taking her heart with him.

She tries to find her way out of the pit of despair, but not one single person, no matter how much she tries, can fill the void that he left in his wake.

Time heals all wounds. Or at least that is how the saying goes.

It’s a crock of crap, though.

Sixteen years pass when Jessie and Ellen see each other again without the influence of the town and bad memories surrounding them, and it’s as if not a single day has passed.

Ellen knows the instant that her eyes see her old love that she’s still just as much in love with him today as she was all those years ago.

The problem is that Jesse wants nothing to do with her. Or at least that’s what he keeps telling himself.

Excerpt

“Why the hell are you out here and not in your fucking room doing that?”  I asked my sixteen-year-old son, Linc.

Linc looked up from his homework, and shrugged.

The problem with Linc doing his homework out here meant that he had the TV blaring, his phone on some stupid Vine video, and his pencil tapping a million miles an hour while he hummed to some random song that only he could hear.

He was also nearly naked.  Had been for the majority of his life.

He ignored me as if I hadn’t said a word.

“Seriously,” I said to him. “What makes you think it’s okay to sit here in your underwear with the fuckin’ front window wide ass open?  There are people in this neighborhood that I’d rather not egg our shit. Not to mention you don’t pay the fuckin’ electric bill and it’s cold as fuck out.”

Linc snorted.

“They’d have to be able to walk close to our cars, and since most of them are old geezers, I don’t see that happening.” He countered. “What’s got up your ass?”

I grunted, walking to the kitchen to grab a beer.  It’d been a long fucking day, and I had to go back to work and do it all over again tomorrow.

I was a welder for a pipeline, and my job was exhaustingly hard work that I fucking loved.  I made a whack, and payed for my bills, but to do that I had to work long hours.  Nearly eighty hours a week.

“Someone called for you today. A woman.”

“What was her name?”  I asked, scanning the contents of the refrigerator for something to eat. “Did you eat all the leftover pizza?”

Linc and I had pizza a lot.  Anything that was fast, and came out of a box, was our go-to menu item seeing as neither one of us really knew how to cook. Lunchables. Macaroni. Hamburger Helper when we were feeling adventurous.

“Ellen?”  Linc guessed.  “I wrote it down on the pad next to the phone.

The name ‘Ellen’ wasn’t common, but it was still impossible for a girl from my past—almost fourteen years ago to be exact—to come back and haunt me some two thousand odd miles away from where I first met her.

“What did she want?”  I asked. “And you never answered me on the pizza.”

“That was gone last night about three in the morning.”  Linc chuckled unrepentantly.  “And I wrote it all down on the note.”

I closed the fridge and moved across the small space to the counter next to the landline that I wasn’t sure why we still had, and stared at the pad of paper with two words on it.

Club party.

“Can I go?”

I looked up to find Linc, the boy that was spitting image of me.

Six feet one, and likely to grow even more since the pediatrician said he’d likely reach my height if not more.  Jet black hair with a slight wave to it, exactly like mine.

Hell, he even had a beard, exactly like me.  Though, his was much more trimmed and kempt due to the school he was attending informing him if it wasn’t done just so, he’d have to shave it or leave the school.

We’d had to fight for the beard, so if he wanted to keep it, he’d damn well follow their rules or I’d make him shave it off myself.

His body mass was the only thing he didn’t have yet that resembled me. He was much skinnier, and definitely on the verge of getting some bulk, just like I had been at seventeen. But he didn’t have it yet. He was still in that in between stage that showed the promise of what he might one day be.

Me, I was six foot four, two hundred and fifty pounds of solid muscle, and had a six pack that was derived from days and days of hard work and sweat on the pipeline. I had a beard that was on the verge of being too bushy, but I’d literally lost all desire to impress anyone a long fucking time ago.

I was me.  I wasn’t going to change, even though some would like me to.

“I’ll have to ask if it’s kid friendly…” I laughed when my son gave me a face that clearly said what he thought about me saying ‘kid friendly.’

My kid wasn’t a kid. He couldn’t be when he was raised by me.

I’d done my best, but I’d been more like a brother than a parent. We were seventeen years apart in age, and there wasn’t a day that went by that I did the whole parenting thing correctly.

He had to grow up faster than most. By the age of ten, I was leaving him at home for extended periods of time because I’d been switched to a different shift that equaled me not getting home from work until a little after nine o’clock.

By the age of twelve, he was spending almost the entire night alone every other day because my shifts were switched again.

By fifteen, we didn’t even pass each other for the entire day at times.

Now, at sixteen, I had a better paying position. One that equaled me working days, though they were long and just as tiring—if not more tiring—as my previous job.  Being peoples’ boss was the pits.  Dealing with peoples’ bullshit was even worse.

“You took me to the last one.”

I grinned.  “That’s right. I did.”

“I can’t believe you’re prospecting. I’m so fuckin’ excited.”

I just shook my head.

My kid rolled his eyes at me and got up, walking toward me with a paper in his hand.  “Read this and make sure it looks good.”

I grabbed the paper and read it, my heart tightening slightly when I read the words on the paper.

“You think I’m a superhero?” I asked quietly, my eyes flicking up to my son’s where he was leaning against the wall.

Linc looked at me, really looked at me, and nodded.

“Yeah, dad. I think you’re a fucking superhero.” He grated out. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here right now, now would I? My paper was on someone who inspires me to be a better person. That’s you, bitch.”

I grabbed my man-child into a headlock and brought him in close to me, then pressed a kiss to the top of his head before taking him down to the ground and tickling him like I used to do when he was six.

“Get out of here, kid. Let me read. You get your shit picked up outside or it’ll get stolen.”

My kid left, luckily putting pants on before he walked outside to pick up his football gear, leaving me to read a paper that was enough to bring a grown man to tears.

Header The Beard Made Me Do It

Jessie and Ellen’s story is here, and with it, Lani Lynn Vale gives us, yet again, another absolutely kickass ride into this favorite series of mine. And what a ride it was, one that started fourteen years prior and never left these two heart or mind…

And like any good ride, these one isn’t without some bumps and tricky turns, and the very first one – well, not really considering their past – was when Jessie James, at the time, prospect for The Dixie Wardens Rejects MC, walking into a club party and sees the woman he left fourteen years ago, the woman he never forgot, in the arms of one of his club members.

And now that I had a better paying job that allowed me the time and ability to actually put forth the effort to become one of them, I wouldn’t be fucking it up now.
Even if the woman that still held my heart had her arm around some other man.
A man who was a fully patched member of The Dixie Wardens MC—the very same MC I was trying to become a member of, that is if I didn’t want to kill myself by the time the process was over.

Well, that sure threw a wrench into his well thought out plans. Ellen was just as shocked, if not more than him, so much so that she could no longer continue dating Sean. After all, he didn’t own her heart. That, she had long ago given to Jessie, which had broken it into pieces.

So you see, we have all the ingredients – as much clusterfuck as they seem, lol – for a incredible story, and that’s what we got, because it was evident to everyone, even poor Sean at the time, that these two belong together. What others had no idea was that they had a past, and feelings that easily resurfaced and could no longer stay hidden.

I was a fucking fool in love. Had been for fourteen years and would be for the next fourteen.

“I love you, Jessie,” the whispered words, barely audible, had my hand clenching on her thigh.
There were those words again.
I bent down, examined Ellen’s sleeping face for signs that she was awake, and whispered back, “I love you, too. Always have, always will.”

Once they – and specially Jessie, because man, talk about pushing away! – got their act together, it was easy for them to get back and reveal all those feelings, and love. And here lies my main, PERSONAL, issue with the story, his constant declarations of endless love, which I normally would swoon over and eat all up and crave for more,(SPOILER ALERT) but after being revealed that he still slept with OW during that time ( which as you well know I’m not a fan by principal, but could totally live with since Ellen did too), these declarations felt kind of empty for me, because come on, he never, not once stopped loving her, but managed to still have sex with other women, even if only two, for release. I would be ok with that, absolutely, but please don’t say you never ever stopped loving her during those fourteen years.(END OF SPOILER ALERT) It’s your second chance, a new start, so if you tried to move on, don’t repeatedly mention you never stopped loving the other. Yes, a tiny detail, and you guys know I’m a picky and detailed oriented bitch, but one tiny snipping in those declarations, and I’m sure I would have love the book even more. Because how could I not? Hello, Lani writes and I devour!!! LOL

Let me take a minute here to praise this universe of loyal men, true brothers, and their awesome women, Lani has given us time and again, and specially these well thought out secondary characters, like it’s the case of Linc, Jessie’s son, who I LOVED too! He was amazing and my heart totally went out to him, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Lani will gives his story in one of her future books. He was such a big part of this story, for obvious reasons, but I can’t wait to see his as a man – which we get a glimpse of in the amazing Epilogue.

There were, at least, a few things in life that were constant. My love for Linc, and my want for other things.
Things that included a certain brown-haired beauty that was never far from my mind.

The Beard Made Me Do It had every single element that Lani Lynn Vale spectacularly delivers, a lot of emotional, romantic, suspense, LOL funny, and über steamy moments, that I can never get enough of, and makes me giddy, and craving even more every time I reach the end. I’m so glad that she is the otherworldly writer that she is, that she provides us one of this bundles of deliciousness per month, which I can’t thank enough! The sure brighten me every single month!  Talk about super woman author skills! And next, I can’t be it’s almost here and I can say: THE GHOST IS COMING!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

“I love you.” A smile overtook my face, and I lifted my arm, running my hand from his wrist to come to a rest on his bearded face.
“I love you more.”

Synopsis

The Boudreaux Series—Sexy. Intriguing. Easy.

No one said change was easy…

Savannah Boudreaux knows what it is to hurt. To bleed. To be afraid that the man she’s promised to be true to until “death do us part” might in fact separate them far sooner than anyone had ever anticipated. But Van also knows what it is to survive. To move on. To live life to the fullest. With five brothers and sisters and a loving mother as her constant source of strength during the pain and the healing, Van realizes there is little else she needs.

But some things never change…

Benjamin Preston sat on the sidelines of the Boudreaux family for years, in love with a woman he couldn’t have. As the best friend of the Boudreaux brothers since childhood, Ben has seen both tragedies and joys in the family. And as a former MMA fighter and Krav Maga expert, Ben’s used to fighting for what he wants—and winning. His hands were tied when Savannah married her high school sweetheart not long after graduation, but now two years have passed since Ben found Savannah broken in her own home.

Sometimes what you need most has been right in front of you the whole time…

Van’s convinced that happiness isn’t in the cards for her, no matter how right it feels to be in Ben’s strong arms—and his bed. Ben is determined to win her heart and fight for her trust. He’s promised to protect her, to be her friend. But more than anything, he wants to finally make her his, and this is one fight he’s not willing to lose.

Excerpt

“Van.”

I spin at the sound of Ben’s voice, and silently cringe. I look horrible. I’m sweating like an ice cold drink without a coaster, and the clothes I wear here are skin tight, making it easier to move.

“You’re not usually here at this time,” I say and dab a towel on my face. “What’s up?”

“I had a meeting with another instructor,” he says with a smile. “Thought I’d say hi.”

“Hi.” I smile and readjust my ponytail. It’s much smaller now, but I can still pull it back. “How was your day?”

“Busy,” he replies and surprises me by letting his eyes travel up and down my body. “I like the new hair. You look great.”

“I’m a mess.” I chuckle and hook my towel around my shoulders. “You, however, do look great.”

That’s a fucking understatement. He’s in cargo shorts and a black tank top, showing off his tattoos and his muscles.

Good lord, the muscles.

“Can I show you a few things?” he asks, breaking my concentration on his muscles.

“Sure,” I frown as I follow him back into the empty classroom. “Am I doing something wrong?”

“No, I just want to go over some form things.” He leads me to the center of the room and stands behind me, looking into my eyes through the mirror.

Oh God. This is way sexier than it probably should be.

“Assume the stance.”

I follow his directions and work very hard to not react to his strong hands on my sides as he walks me through punches, kicks, and better ways to keep my center of gravity.

“You’re small,” he murmurs and pushes my legs just a little closer together. “I want you to keep your feet just a little closer together. You’ll have better balance.”

I nod. “It feels better.”

He smiles at me. I can’t keep my eyes off of him in the mirror. The way he moves, his facial expressions.

Ben has always been attractive to me, but holy shit, did he get hotter? Or was I just too broken before to see it?

Because holy shit, he’s hot.

“Van?”

“Yeah?”

“I just asked you to do the spin/elbow move.”

“Oh.” I bite my lip and will myself to stop ogling his arms.

“Are you okay?”

“Of course.” I do as he asks and spin, attempting to ram my elbow in his nose, the way I’ve been taught, but he blocks and sends me onto my ass. “Damn it.”

“You’re not spinning quickly enough.”

“I’m as clumsy as they get,” I remind him. “If I spin too fast, I’ll fall on my ass. I’ll be helping my attacker more than anything.”

“It’ll actually feel easier,” he says, helping me to my feet. “You can do this. I’ve seen it.”

“You’re taller than anyone else I’ve ever sparred with.”

“Good,” he says and narrows his eyes. “Chances are, if you ever have to defend yourself, your attacker won’t be shorter than you.”

“True.” I nod thoughtfully.

“But if you’re still not comfortable doing this with me, that’s fine. I can make suggestions for Shelly to work on next week.”

“I’m okay,” I reply, and am surprised to realize that it’s true. It wasn’t long ago that I couldn’t stand for any man to touch me, not even my brothers. But I don’t mind so much now.

In fact, I’m utterly shocked to realize that his touch is turning me on. I don’t remember the last time I had sexual thoughts toward a man. Even Ben. Which was one more thing that made me sad.

But hello, long lost hormones.

 Header Easy Nights

I can’t believe Van and Ben’s story is finally here! After wanting this book since the very beginning of the series, now it’s here, it revealed to be a bittersweet event, because it simultaneously makes me crazy happy that we finally got these two’s story, but sad because it also marks the ending of one of my all time favorite series and family, the Boudreaux. Oh, well, that just made me enjoy it that much more, and savour every single word.

Easy Nights is a emotional, hopeful and romantic tale, with plenty of steam, from friends to lovers. But what surprised me was that this book was as much about healing, and personal growth, as it was a romantic novel.

I’m here, I’m alive, and I don’t look like I’m going to break at any moment.

It finally feels like that chapter is closed, and I’m ready to see what the next one brings.

Two years have passed since that horrific night where Savannah’s abusive husband raped, beat and tried to murder her – event not retold, we just know from the previous books’ info -, but she survived, and now divorced and feeling that she’s finally healed, she decides it’s time for a new chapter in her life.

Just so it happens this new attitude is exactly what breaks Ben’s resolution to stay away from her. Knowing he has the support of her brothers, and that Van is finally in a good place, and ready to start anew, even her sassiness and flirty spirit are back, proves to be too much, and he decides he can’t take it any more, pretending just being friends and lays all cards in the table.

“This is what I want,” he whispers. “You are what I want, Savannah.”

Well, and I, like their family, have to say: It’s about time!!! LOL

Since his feelings are more than reciprocated, given both have been trying to ignore and deny their attraction since their youth, it was only nature that their relationship developed at the speed light, and they very soon expressed their love and feelings.

“You’re amazing, Savannah.” He presses his lips ever so gently to the soft skin below my ear. “You’re the most fantastic person I’ve ever known in my life, and I love you so much my body aches with it.”

‘Friends to lovers’ and ‘best-friend with little sister’ normally are very tricky tropes for me to fully enjoy, given my personal pet-peeves, specially because normally the main characters already saw the other with other people, or proclaimed to have always loved (or been IN love) with the respective other since forever, but then go against it and sleep with others. I can honestly say this was beautifully solved and exposed here, because although they had always been attracted in some way, and loved each other in a caring way, they never claimed to have been ‘in love’, nor were other people rubbed in each others face, and the references to their sexual past are almost non existent in the book. I was so happy with that, but what truly blew my mind was the way Kristen Proby, via Mallory explained perfectly why now was the time they were meant to be together. I adored this…

“And I feel stupid, like I should have known Ben was the one for me all along.”
“He wasn’t the one for you yet,” Mallory says quietly. “People fit differently in our lives at different times. You weren’t meant to be with him until now, because you weren’t the person you are until now.”
“I believe that,” I say slowly. “And I wonder if we’d dated a decade ago, if it would have stuck. We were both young, and like Mallory said, different people. The chemistry was always there, at least on my part. From what he’s told me, he felt it then, too. But would we have really fallen in love? I’m not so sure. And if we had fallen in love, the odds of it surviving through college are probably smaller.”

Isn’t that the most perfect way to see this trope?! So incredibly thought out and exposed!

Even Ben’s himself reveals the same understanding. This says it all,

“You’re a special woman, Savannah Boudreaux. I’ve known that since we were young. I don’t feel like the time we didn’t have together was wasted because it made us both into who we are today, and without that, we might not be together now.”

Of course that now that Van and Ben thought all her trauma and horrid past where finally behind her and their HEA was just within reach, someone decides to try to steal that peace and destroy all they built together, and all the healing she finally obtained.

“Then why do I still have that horrible dream?”
“Because the past is always with us, even when we think we’ve moved on. There’s something, even if it’s in your subconscious, that’s still afraid of him.”

I’ll not reveal any more because I want you to enjoy the ride as much as I did. Van’s ‘rebirth’  is as much part of the book as is the romance between them, and I understand that was the objective, to show her strength and it’s possible to survive something like it happened to her and still obtain your very own HEA, but, in my view that kind of stole a bit of the focus and emotion on their relationship on itself. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of passion there, and sexy times, but after so much expectation since the very first book, I was hoping to feel even more chemistry and emotion. Maybe that was me, but at times I felt Ben was far to contained, when I thought he would be more Alpha. I know he was unbelievably understanding of her situation, and for that he showed more restrain, to protect and take care of her, but I wanted more emotion, even more passion between the couple! Nonetheless, Easy Nights was an amazing cherry on top of this EXTRAORDINARY series. That epilogue sure was the perfect closure, and I confess I shed a tear or two, with how beautifully is written.

And now I’m sad because it seems I’m saying goodbye to some of my loved ones – which they after all – and this spectacular New Orleans setting. I hope this isn’t the last Kristen gives us of this universe.

I miss the Boudreaux already… Uhmmm, guess it’s time for a reread! 😉 <3 <3 <3 <3

“Don’t you ever fucking forget what you are to me,” he says. His blue eyes are on fire and on mine.
“What am I?” I ask and watch in fascination as his eyes darken. His jaw tightens. His grip on my ass digs in just enough to sting.
It’s fucking delicious.
“You’re everything.” He kisses me, his lips much gentler than the rest of him. “You are the beginning and the end of me, Savannah. I don’t work without you.”
“You’re my everything too,” I reply.

After a painful loss, Cady Moreland is coming to Magdalene to start the next chapter of her life. A chapter that began eighteen years ago but had a heartbreaking ending. The time in between was full of family and friendship, but Cady could never get the man she fell in love with all those years ago out of her heart.

Coert Yeager has learned to live without the girl who entered his life right when she shouldn’t and exited delivering a crippling blow he never would have suspected. The time in between was full of failing to find what he was missing…and life-altering betrayal.

But when that girl shows up in Magdalene and buys the town’s beloved lighthouse, even if Coert wants to avoid her, he can’t. A fire in town sparks a different kind of flame that won’t be ignored.

As Cady and Coert question the actions of the two young adults they once were thrown into earth-shattering circumstances, can they learn from what came in between and find each other again?

About the Author

Kristin Ashley - headshot

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt

‘What do you want, Raya?’

She steps toward me tentatively, as if she’s questioning what she’s doing. And when she reaches me, her chest pressed to mine, she gazes up at me. ‘I don’t know.’ Her eyes are wild and unsure. ‘But I know that every time we’re close, something powerful takes over. And you’re trying hard to fight it. You’re warm and cold. What are you scared of?’

‘You.’ My mouth is on her before I can think better of it, and I’ve lifted her from her feet before my tongue breaches the seam on her lips. We should talk, but this is the only thing I know what to say right now, and when her arms circle my shoulders, her mouth opening up, inviting me in, I know she’s okay with it. I know she gets it.

With one arm around her waist holding her to me and one secured on the nape of her neck, I walk to my office, my kiss deep, my blood racing, my heart bouncing off my ribcage. I set her on her feet and take the hem of her dress, pulling it up over her head, losing her lips for just a second in the process. She wrenches my shirt open, scattering buttons in the process, her hands immediately finding my skin beneath. My forward steps encourages her backwards, our kiss deepening as she unfastens my trousers and I push her knickers down her thighs.

We’re all over the place, desperation getting the better of us, a mess of tongues, hands and bodies. I pull some strength from nowhere, seize her hands and break our kiss, breathing heavily. Her unsure brown eyes soon prompts me to start ridding myself of the rest of my clothes, all under her watchful gaze. Until I’m naked.

‘This wasn’t supposed to happen,’ she whispers.

Header All I am 3.5

What a better way to celebrate – for those celebrating – Father’s Day than with Super Dad himself, Drew Davies?! Well, I’ll tell you, All I Am is an deliciously hot way to spend a couple of hours and will leave wanting even more from Jodi Ellen Malpas’ This Man series!

I can’t express how excited I was when Jodi first announced she was releasing this novella, since, like most of you who have read The lord of the Manor trilogy, I always craved more and more of this fantastic universe. And that’s exactly what JEM gave us!

Eight years after the end of This Man Confessed, Drew, that we know as the most broody and introvert of the hot trio of friends, is now a single parent – thanks to Cora’s devious and revolting shenanigans – of an adorable little girl, the good that came of of something awful.

Georgia is the center of his universe, his everything, and he wants nothing else apart from the occasional and detached liaisons at his usual sex club. And that is exactly where he meets Raya, the woman who’s going to push his world out of kilter, and make his question all this stone written resolutions.

For the first time I can remember, I’m envious of my friends’ contentment. Both Jesse and Sam are still head over heels, eight years later. I honestly never thought they would find women who could handle them. And now it’s just me. It never bothered me before now.

But don’t think it was an easy ride, which surprised me due to the length of story. Raya has major hung-ups of her own, very valid ones I’d say, and both struggle with this insane lust and magnetism. They both have complicated situations and pasts, but for me, Drew’s pushing away, along with some other details and actions in their story, kind of put me off, and stole from my full enjoyment. Don’t get me wrong, I still devoured it, like everything JEM writes, but Drew’s almost to the end resistance to Arya’s importance and giving into his feelings took far too long and dominated the novella. That being sad, revisiting all the gang and seeing Jesse in all his Alpha hotness was priceless. Drew should have listen to the man! He got his woman and his HEA, so he knows what he’s talking about, lol!

“What?” he questions. Jesse’s eyes roll dramatically, his big chest expanding under his Ralph Lauren shirt on an inhale. “You practically trampled a guy.” He toasts me with his glass. “That’s a fucking huge red flag, mate.”

I stare at my bottle moodily. “He was a cock.” Sam and Jesse both laugh. “I’m glad you two are finding this amusing.” I’m in fucking bits here.

Sam’s palm lands on my good shoulder. “It happens to the best of us, my man. I have fucking battle wounds from the cat-and-mouse games Kate had me playing, and worst of all I didn’t even realize I was fucking playing. Women do that. Make you lose your sense and perspective.”

OMG, and the scene of the three men with Georgia was the best!!! I’ll not spoil it for you, but really it was a major highlight and put a huge smile on my face!

Jodi gave us yet another amazingly well written story, with complex characters in Drew and Raya, and a speedy emotional roller coaster that you MUST read! Even if you haven’t read the original trilogy – what are you waiting for??? – you can still fully enjoy and understand this book, and for those who read, I’m sure you’re already digging into it, because hello… Jesse Ward! But if you aren’t here’s your chance. Believe me, you will not want to miss this über sexy, emotional and funny novella! Now, counting down the days for The Forbidden! <3 <3 <3 <3

“Georgia asked me if I loved you. And you know what? I do. What else could explain this madness?”

About the Author

British talent Jodi Ellen Malpas sold hundreds of thousands of e-books of her passionately erotic trilogy This Man before landing a major US publishing deal and sailing straight to the top of the New York Times bestsellers chart in a few short months. Success quickly followed in the UK, with thousands of readers falling head-over-heels for the devastatingly handsome Lord of the Manor Jesse Ward and his feisty counterpart, Ava O’Shea, as all three books became major Sunday Times bestsellers. This was followed by further success with her second series One Night, which introduced the irresistibly enigmatic M.

Jodi was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, England, where she lives with her two boys and a beagle. She is a self-professed daydreamer, a Converse and, mojito addict, and has a terrible weak spot for Alpha Males.

TOO CLOSE TO CALL - cover

Synopsis

All-American wide receiver Kyler Tate’s life is about to change. A fairytale college career skyrocketed him to the NFL draft. Adoration and opportunity are thrown in his direction wherever he goes, thanks to being chosen in the first round by the Los Angeles Rage.

None of the accolades mean anything, though, without his high school sweetheart, Bree Sutton, by his side. Four years ago, she walked away from Kyler, choosing a quiet life over the flash and notoriety his career would someday bring.

Now he’s back in their Indiana hometown, refusing to leave for Los Angeles without her. Demanding she give their life together a shot. Her heart never stopped bleeding for the love of her life, but Bree’s decision was final. Too bad their wild attraction has only been amplified by their separation, and Kyler won’t quit until Bree is wearing his ring.

Excerpt

“Bree.” Her blood snapped with electricity at the sound of her name, said in that low drawl. Kyler stepped to the forefront of the crowd. The green eyes that still graced her dreams zeroed in, raking over her like they couldn’t help it.

Heaven above, four years looked incredible on him. Extra inches had been added everywhere. His height. The athletic breadth of his shoulders. The corded biceps that tested the stitching of his T-shirt sleeves. Even his thighs, which were wrapped up in faded denim, were exploding with muscle; thighs she’d spent a good portion of her youth perched on since Kyler never allowed her to sit anywhere but his lap, no matter where they were or whether it was appropriate. “Hello.”

“Hello,” she whispered. “You’re in town.”

His slow nod was so familiar a ripple moved through her. “Here for the week. Can I get you that coffee?”

“No.” She flushed over her own abruptness. “I meant to say, I can’t stay. I’m going to be late for an appointment.”

“Fine. I’ll walk you out.”

His expression dared her to say no. Challenged her. And for the first time since Kyler left, sexual awareness danced in her middle, sending a swift tremble down the length of her legs. Because her body hadn’t forgotten what often lay on the other side of those challenges. “Fine,” she breathed. “Suit yourself.”

For all his sexual energy, Kyler was a gentleman, straight down to the soles of his feet. So Bree wasn’t one bit surprised when his long gait ate up the distance between them. He reached over her head to push open the glass door, sending his scent crashing into her senses, the combination so familiar, Bree’s nipples tightened until she winced. Grassy fields and Nautica Blue aftershave.

Their gazes clashed, but Bree couldn’t decide if he’d worn the scent on purpose. His steady eyes gave nothing away. Before hers could betray her curiosity, Bree turned and passed through the door Kyler held open. And hell if it wasn’t the longest walk in history, his presence behind her looming larger than a mountain. Every eyeball in the diner was sure to be on them and the attention made Bree twitchy, her fingers yanking on the strings of her hoodie.

She needed to get this reunion over with as soon as possible. Being around Kyler would only make her wonder what might have been. That kind of thinking was pointless. Destructive.

Back in high school, the writing had been on the wall when it came to Kyler. Everyone knew he’d been destined for greatness. That he would shake off Bloomfield and put his name in the history books. She’d been selfish to stay with him for so long, absorbing his love and attention, all the while knowing she’d wave good-bye to him someday. The decision was a painful one, but it had been made and now she would stick to it.

Header Too Close too Call 1

Tessa Bailey complete and utterly blew my mind with Too Close To Call. Talk about the PERFECT second chance romance! With Kyler and Bree’s story, Ms. Bailey proved how a novella could pack a whole world of feelings, that normally we relate to a full length novel. Too Close to Call was the perfect emotional and sexy punch to add to this already amazing series. So much so, that it became my favorite of the Romancing The Clarkson series!

We met Kyler in Too Hard to Forget – but fear not, if you haven’t read the previous one, you can still enjoy and understand the whole plot – where we got a glimpse of his broken heart, and the love he still had for Bree, his high school sweetheart.

Truth be told, she was so much more than that. So, when Kyler comes to a pillar moment in his professional career, he realizes he needs Bree to really live.

Bree didn’t want to break Kyler’s – and her – heart, four years prior, but she couldn’t leave her hometown and family behind, for a very valid reason, to follow their dreams. So, she had to break them up, and stay behind, setting Kyler free to pursue him football career. She thought time would heal them both, but a love like that can’t be forgotten.

Fast forwarding four years, after Kyler’s big revelation, he decides to go get his girl, and he won’t take no for answer, and won’t leave his hometown without her.

No one spoke, moved, smiled, smelled like her.

“And you were the exception. Not the other way around. That’s why I brought flowers and shook your daddy’s hand at the door. I knew there’d never be another Bree Justice.”

I have to say Kyler went straight to my top 3 fav Tessa Bailey heroes! This man, even in is young age is EVERYTHING!!! I’m talking full on swoon-worthy, panty-melting, heart-thumping, sigh-inducing male material here. No wonder Bree never even though of moving on. With a man like this, who could forget?

Jesus, he loved her. Couldn’t she see it? That he would never love another woman as long as they both lived?

No other woman had ever elicited the smallest percentage of his body’s reaction to Bree. Not ever. No one ever would, either, because his heart was connected to every part of him. His heart knew what it wanted and it wouldn’t waver.

“Bree,” he croaked, pressure pushing inward on his skull. “Fuck, Bree. I almost died from missing you.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

See what I meant? Perfect male character! And all this loyalty and devotion, coupled with the most delicious and smoking hot package, Bree didn’t stand a chance to deny him.

Kyler had so many ledges, cuts, and bulges of muscle, Bree had the urge to strap on a harness and scale him like a rock climbing wall.

But even so, Bree’s fears and doubt remained the same, even after this time apart, so Tyler knew he had to use every single weapon in his arsenal to be able to convince Bree to give them another chance. He wouldn’t accept no for an answer, when it came to their life together.

“I’ve loved you as far back as my memory reaches. I will never fucking stop. I came to town for one damn reason, Bree. So I could leave here with my wife. You.”

Of course with a palpable, scorchingly HOT chemistry and magnetism like their, there wasn’t much Bree could deny. She was unable to resist it or Kyler filthy-talking mouth, that, FYI, it should come with a warning. Yes, we are talking about Tessa Bailey here, the ‘Queen of Dirty Talking’, but seriously, O…M…G!!!!!

“Had to find a different spot every week because we’d wear the grass down to nothing. From fucking on top of it. Wouldn’t we, Bree?”

“We never did this quietly, did we?”
Kyler’s voice sounded just as unnatural as hers when he responded. “A man can’t stay silent when he’s wrapped up in something so tight.”

“What other mercies can I earn from you today?” Kyler rasped. “If you’ve already forgotten how I beg for that mercy, my tongue is dying to show you.”

And these are just three examples, because believe me, I feel like I highlighted most of the book, either due to his wicked mouth or his heartfelt declarations! I seriously recommend this book to every romance reader out there. I couldn’t have loved it any more, and I can say it, with how particular I am with second chance stories, that I wouldn’t change a single word. It was written perfection! In this short read we go through all the feels and all the emotions, and by the end you’ll be guaranteed to have a warm heart, a delicious tingling throughout your body and a happy buzz that will no soon leave. Now I’m more than ready for Belmont and Sage’s story, Too Beautiful to Break. Can’t wait!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

“What about what you want?”
“I want us,” he rasped. “I’ll build everything else around that. That has been my plan since age thirteen. It just got delayed.”

Commitment was in the way they looked at one another. Not a damn thing, especially some days apart, could test their bond. It was airtight.

About the Author

Tessa Bailey - headshot

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Excerpt

Draft Day was nothing like Kyler had pictured.

“With the ninth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rage select…” Kyler Tate’s parents sucked in breaths on either side of him. “Kyler Tate, receiver, University of Cincinnati.”

The tense atmosphere inside the event hall exploded with wild cheers, exclamations, and boos. His shoulders were slapped by thousands of hands, kisses landing on his cheeks. Like falling out of a kayak into a rushing current, bashing into rocks on the way toward a waterfall, Kyler stood, put his head down, and proceeded toward the stage. Cell phones rang at every table he passed, terse conversations taking place as the deadline timer for the next announcement started. Players he’d faced on the gridiron sweated in their suits, mothers fussed, water glasses were refilled.

This was it. Years of training, icing down injuries, two-a-day practices, glory, pain, and mental fatigue. All for this moment.

And it was…utterly fucking incomplete.

Before he could reach the stage, panic set in. Set in real good, like claws digging into fertile ground. A moment earlier, everyone in the room had looked familiar, but they were strangers now, spinning in a kaleidoscope. Sweat popped up on his forehead. His shoulder blades tightened, a harsh sound puffed from between his lips. From behind the podium, the announcer gave him a strange look, the Rage jersey lowering in his grip. Are you okay?

The man’s mouthed words barely penetrated over the sudden rushing stream of images. Of her. Bree Justice.

Too Close to Call was the perfect emotional punch to add to this already amazing series.
